Overview: Why We Use This Feature
Outgoing Transfers record the movement of cannabis inventory from your facility to a Destination Facility, along with the transporter, driver, vehicle, and route details that travel with the shipment. Creating a Transfer in Canix builds the Transfer record and its package list, and reserves those packages against the shipment. For Metrc facilities, the Transfer is created in Canix as a Draft Transfer Template and is then registered in Metrc to become a Licensed Transfer, which is what sends it to the Destination Facility’s Metrc account. For Non-Metrc facilities, the Transfer and its Manifest live entirely in Canix, and the Manifest is generated as a customizable PDF for printing. The process is mostly the same between Metrc and Non-Metrc submissions, unique differences will be called out in the documentation.
Transfers can be built from scratch or driven from the Sales Order that they fulfill. Working from a Sales Order pre-fills the transfer details, auto-adds the packages from the order, and optionally carries package prices across, which is faster and leaves less opportunity for error. Where a Transfer already exists, it can be attached to a Sales Order after the fact so the sale and the shipment stay connected.
Several things on this screen happen automatically rather than being steps you take. The Route is generated between your facility and the Destination Facility as soon as the Destination Facility is selected, the Arrival Time recalculates from the Departure Time, and transfers created from a Sales Order pre-fill with the transporter details last used for that customer. Package Tags auto-populate when the Transfer Template is opened in Metrc.
In this article the following actions are covered:
Create Outgoing Transfers: Outgoing Transfers can be created quickly and easily in Canix as needed. For Metrc customers, after submitting your Outgoing Transfer in Canix, there will be one more quick and easy step to take in Metrc after submission to complete the compliance process.
Create Transfer from Sales Order: In order to help expedite the Sales process, Canix offers the functionality to create a transfer directly from a Sales Order, pre-filling transfer details, saving you time, and helping to move through the process more efficiently with less opportunity for error.
Associate an Existing Transfer to a Sales Order: Oftentimes, multiple people may be working on a Sales Order at one time. This may end up preventing a Transfer from being created to complete the sale. Canix has a feature that allows users to associate an existing Transfer to a Sales Order.
Configure a Non-Metrc Manifest: Manifest customization ensures your Outgoing Transfer Manifests comply with your state requirements, including all relevant information regarding licenses, cannabis goods, transfer routes, vehicle information, driver information and signature lines for all individuals involved in receiving or delivering inventory.
Register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc: In order to successfully Transfer inventory out of your Canix instance, you must register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc. After creating a Transfer directly in Canix, usually from a Sales Order, follow these steps to complete the process of registering the Transfer Template in Metrc.
Print a Metrc Transfer Manifest: After creating an Outgoing Transfer in Canix and registering it in Metrc, follow these steps to print the Manifest directly from Metrc.
Glossary
- Outgoing Transfer: The record of inventory leaving your facility for a Destination Facility, including the packages being sent and the transport details.

Prerequisites & Setup
Before beginning, ensure the following requirements are met:
- Permissions:
- Sales permissions are required to create and manage Transfers. Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > Permission Groups > Sales > Outgoing Transfers:
-
Edit Transfers: allows creation and editing after creation. This is what Non-Metrc users need in order to edit a Transfer from the Sales Order’s View Transfer screen.
- In order to add Transfers to existing Sales Orders you’ll also need edit access to Sales Order permission.
- View Transfers: transfer information can be viewed but not created, edited or deleted.
- Necessary Data:
- Packages in Active status to add to the Transfer. Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
- A Destination Facility record for the receiving license, searchable by facility name or the last few numbers of the license number.
- A Driver and a Vehicle. Both can be selected from the drop down or added during transfer creation.
- For the Sales Order flows, a Sales Order with all packages assigned that has not yet been assigned a Manifest number. Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Sales Orders
- For registering and printing Metrc Transfers, Metrc login credentials for the facility.
- Manifest configuration is available to Non-Metrc facilities only.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Each Action
Create Outgoing Transfers
Important Considerations for Create Outgoing Transfers
These “pro-tips” and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- The Destination Facility cannot be updated after the transfer has been created. Ensure you are selecting the correct Destination Facility.
- Field requirements: Name, Destination Facility, Transfer Type, Transport Facility, Departure Time, Arrival Time, Driver, Vehicle, and Route are required. 2nd Driver and package prices are optional.
- We suggest using Facility/Customer Name - Date for the transfer Name, such as “Smoke Shop - 5/25/23”.
- Transfer Type is usually “Transfer”.
- Arrival Time will update automatically based on the Departure Time, or you can adjust it manually.
- The Route is automatically generated between your facility and the Destination Facility. Click the map icon to optionally make changes.
- If you’re transferring between internal licenses, you can enter the vehicle as “On Prem”.
- Creating the Transfer from a Sales Order is faster and more accurate. It prefills the transfer information, auto-adds the packages from the Sales Order, and allows package prices to populate automatically.
- Metrc facilities are not finished when the Transfer is created in Canix. The Transfer arrives in Metrc as a Draft Transfer Template and must be registered in Metrc to complete the compliance process.

- To view Outgoing Transfers. Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Outgoing Transfers
Troubleshooting for Create Outgoing Transfers
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- The Destination Facility on the Transfer is wrong. The Destination Facility cannot be updated after the transfer has been created. Delete or cancel the Transfer and create a new one with the correct Destination Facility.
- The Transfer is not showing in Metrc under Licensed. Creating the Transfer in Canix produces a Draft Transfer Template. It appears under Transfers > Templates in Metrc until you register it.
- The Driver or Vehicle you need is not in the drop down. Begin typing in the field to search, and add a new Driver or Vehicle directly from the same field if none matches.
- Package prices are blank on the Transfer. Prices are entered manually on a Transfer created this way. To have them populate automatically, create the Transfer from the Sales Order and enable Save Transfer Prices from Sales Orders in Edit Profile.
- A package is not available to add to the Transfer. Packages already committed to another Transfer are not available. Deleting that Transfer returns its packages to Active.
- The submission failed. Navigate to Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > User Submissions; if the submission status is Failed, click on the submission name to see the error message.
Create Transfer from Sales Order
Important Considerations for Create Transfer from Sales Order
These “pro-tips” and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Field requirements: the Sales Order must have all packages assigned and must not yet have been assigned a Manifest number. A Sales Order that already has a Transfer cannot take another.
- Packages on a transfer created from a Sales Order will maintain the order from the Sales Order. They are displayed on the Transfer Manifest in the order they are displayed on the Sales Order.
- No inventory information will populate on a transfer unless the package is on the Sales Order, for example Item Name.
- The transfer will pre-fill with the transfer details from the last transporter used for that customer. If you have never transported to that customer before, our system will pre-fill with the transporter last used on your most recent transfer.
- Pre-filled fields include Name, Destination Facility, Transporter Facility, Driver, Vehicle, Route, and Departure Time. The Name pre-fills as [Customer Name] - [Date]. All of these can be manually changed as needed.
- Package prices are not pre-populated by default. Enable Save Transfer Prices from Sales Orders in Edit Profile to have them populate automatically. Each Canix user enables this for themselves, and it applies to new transfers created going forward.
- Michigan customers have the option to manually enter the Gross Weight for packages when creating Outgoing Transfers.
- Metrc facilities are not finished when the Transfer is created in Canix. The Transfer must still be registered in Metrc to complete the compliance process.
Step by Step Instructions for Create Transfer from Sales Order
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow:
- Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Sales Orders
- Select a Sales Order that has all packages assigned but has not yet been assigned a manifest number, meaning a transfer has not yet been created for that sale. Scroll to the bottom of the Sales Orders to find Assign Transfer, then select + Create Transfer.
- Note: no inventory information will populate on a transfer unless the package is on the sales order, for example Item Name
- Finish completing the Transfer data. Data will pre-fill with the transfer details from the last transporter used for that customer; if you have never transported to that customer before, our system will pre-fill with the transporter last used on your most recent transfer
- Michigan customers have the option to manually enter the Gross Weight for packages when creating Outgoing Transfers
- Pre-filled fields include Name ([Customer Name] - [Date]), Destination Facility, Transporter Facility, Driver, Vehicle, Route, and Departure Time
- Packages will be displayed on the Transfer Manifest in the order they are displayed on the Sales Order
-
Confirm data and select “Create”
- Metrc facilities: navigate to your Metrc account and Register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc to complete the compliance process
Troubleshooting for Create Transfer from Sales Order
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Assign Transfer is not available on the Sales Order. The Sales Order may already have a Manifest number, which means a Transfer already exists for that sale. A Sales Order can only carry one Transfer.
- Item information is missing on the Transfer. No inventory information will populate on a transfer unless the package is on the Sales Order.
- The prices did not carry over from the Sales Order. Enable Save Transfer Prices from Sales Orders in Edit Profile. The setting is per user and applies only to new transfers created after it is enabled.
- The transporter, driver, or vehicle pre-filled incorrectly. The transfer pre-fills from the last transporter used for that customer, or from your most recent transfer if you have never transported to that customer. Change any pre-filled field manually before selecting Create.
- The packages are in the wrong order on the Manifest. Packages display on the Transfer Manifest in the order they appear on the Sales Order. Reorder them on the Sales Order before creating the transfer.
- The submission failed. Navigate to Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > User Submissions; if the submission status is Failed, click on the submission name to see the error message.
Associate an Existing Transfer to a Sales Order
Important Considerations for Associate an Existing Transfer to a Sales Order
These “pro-tips” and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- There is not an option to un-assign or un-associate a Transfer once it has been assigned to a Sales Order. Once it has been assigned, you can only delete the Transfer.
- The Sales Order must not already have an associated Transfer. Select an existing Sales Order that does not have one, or create a new Sales Order.
- Deleting an Associated Transfer directly from the Sales Order is only available for Metrc customers. Non-Metrc customers delete from the Outgoing Transfer itself by cancelling it.
- Deleting does not just un-associate the Transfer. Selecting Delete will delete the Transfer, and all associated packages will return to Active.
- Non-Metrc customers will also be able to Edit Transfer details from the View Transfer screen on the Sales Order.
- This is the workflow to use when several people are working on the same Sales Order, which can otherwise prevent a Transfer from being created to complete the sale.
Step by Step Instructions for Associate an Existing Transfer to a Sales Order
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow:
- Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Sales Orders and select the Sales Order (or create a new order) to associate the Transfer
- In the details section of the sales order select Assign Transfer > Select Existing Transfer
- Search the Transfers list to find the Transfer to associate to the Sales Order
- Select the Transfer and click “Select”. After selecting the Transfer, you will now be able to view the Associated Transfer by clicking View Transfer
Delete an Associated Transfer
The steps vary depending on your facility type.
Metrc Facilities:
- Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Sales Orders and Select the Sales Order
- Scroll down to the Transfer section of the Sales Order and Select Delete
- Confirm you want to Delete the Transfer Template by selecting Delete Transfer
- Note: This will not just un-associate the Transfer. By selecting Delete this will delete the Transfer and all associated packages will return to Active
- Note: If the Transfer is already registered in Metrc, you will not be able to delete the Transfer.
Non-Metrc Facilities:
- Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Outgoing Transfers
- Check the box next to the Transfer you wish to delete and in the top-right corner, click Cancel Transfer
Troubleshooting for Associate an Existing Transfer to a Sales Order
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- The Transfer was associated to the wrong Sales Order. There is not an option to un-assign or un-associate a Transfer once it has been assigned. Delete the Transfer, then create or associate the correct one.
- Select Existing Transfer is not offered on the Sales Order. The Sales Order may already have an associated Transfer. A Sales Order can only carry one.
- Delete is not available in the Transfer section of the Sales Order. Deleting an Associated Transfer directly from the Sales Order is only available for Metrc customers. Non-Metrc customers cancel the Transfer from Transact > Sales Management > Outgoing Transfers instead.
- Packages disappeared from a Transfer you deleted. Deleting the Transfer returns all associated packages to Active, where they can be added to a new Transfer.
- The Transfer details cannot be edited from the Sales Order. Non-Metrc customers can edit Transfer details after selecting View Transfer. Metrc facilities make changes by deleting the Transfer Template and creating it again.
Configure a Non-Metrc Manifest
Important Considerations for Configure a Non-Metrc Manifest
These “pro-tips” and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- This feature is specific to non-Metrc customers only and applies to Outgoing Transfers. Metrc facilities print the Metrc Manifest from Metrc instead. See Print a Metrc Transfer Manifest.
- You must create an Outgoing Transfer before configuring a Manifest. Manifest configuration is reached by opening the Manifest number on an existing Transfer.
- Always included and not configurable: Originating License, Destination License, Transporter info, and Estimated departure and arrival times.
- Enabled by default: Package Tags, Strain, Production Batch, Price, number of Driver Signature Lines (2x), and number of Receiver Signature Lines (1x).
- Disabled by default: Non-cannabis inventory, Item Type, Net Weight, Lot ID, Item Notes, Transfer Route, and Expiration Date. Check your state requirements before printing, since several commonly required fields are off until you enable them.
- Generating creates a new Manifest document. The new Manifest will automatically be downloaded as a PDF to be printed.
Step by Step Instructions for Configure a Non-Metrc Manifest
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow:
Before accessing Manifest configuration options, you’ll first need to create an Outgoing Transfer. After creating an Outgoing Transfer, you’ll be able to access Manifest configuration from 2 places:
- Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Sales Orders and click on the Manifest number OR Navigate to Transact > Sales Management > Outgoing Transfers and click on the Manifest number
- Open the manifest and select Manifest Actions > Configure New Manifest
- Select your preferences for the Manifest display.
- Select Generate to create the new customized Manifest document. The new Manifest will automatically be downloaded as a PDF to be printed
Troubleshooting for Configure a Non-Metrc Manifest
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Manifest Actions is not available. Manifest configuration is only reachable from an existing Transfer. Create the Outgoing Transfer first, then open its Manifest number from the Sales Order or the Outgoing Transfers list.
- The configuration options are not offered at all. This feature is specific to non-Metrc customers only. Metrc facilities view and print the Manifest from Metrc.
- A field your state requires is missing from the printed Manifest. Several fields are disabled by default, including Net Weight, Lot ID, Item Notes, Transfer Route, and Expiration Date. Open Configure New Manifest and select them, then Generate again.
- The Manifest did not download. The new Manifest downloads automatically as a PDF after you select Generate. Check your browser’s downloads and any pop-up blocker before retrying.
- The configuration changes did not appear on the Manifest. Selecting options alone does not update the document. Select Generate to create the new customized Manifest.
Register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc
Important Considerations for Register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc
These “pro-tips” and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- This action must be finished in Metrc and cannot be done just in Canix. This is a Metrc limitation as they do not allow third-party integrators, such as Canix, to submit this data directly to Metrc.
- The Transfer must already exist in Canix. Create the Transfer in Canix first, usually from a Sales Order, then register the Draft Transfer Template in Metrc.
- Registering turns a Template into a Licensed Transfer. Until you select Register Transfer, the Transfer sits under Transfers > Templates and is not a compliant Transfer.
- Package Tags will auto-populate when the Template is opened in Metrc.
- After your Transfer is registered, it will be sent to the Destination Facility’s Metrc account and the Packages on your Transfer will move from Active to In Transit. These Packages will be fully removed from your Metrc Facility once the Destination Facility clicks Accept.
- Review the details before registering. The Transfer opens with the information entered during creation in Canix, and this is the last point at which it is easy to correct.
Step by Step Instructions for Register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
- Log into Metrc
- Navigate to Transfers > Templates
- Find the Transfer you just created and select Use on the far-right side
- The Transfer will open with the information you entered during creation in Canix; review all details to make sure everything appears correct and complete
- Package Tags will auto-populate
- Verify that everything looks correct and complete
- Select Register Transfer to turn the Template into a Licensed Transfer
- Navigate to Transfers > Licensed > Outgoing to view your Transfer
Troubleshooting for Register an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- The Transfer is not under Transfers > Templates in Metrc. Confirm the Transfer was created and submitted in Canix. Check Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > User Submissions; if the submission status is Failed, click on the submission name to see the error message.
- The Transfer is not under Transfers > Licensed. A Transfer stays a Template until you select Register Transfer in Metrc. Registering is what makes it Licensed.
- A detail on the Transfer is wrong and it has not been registered yet. Delete the Transfer Template and create the Transfer again in Canix with the correct details, since the Destination Facility in particular cannot be changed after creation.
- Packages moved to In Transit unexpectedly. This is expected after registering. Registering sends the Transfer to the Destination Facility’s Metrc account and moves the Packages from Active to In Transit.
- The Packages are still showing at your facility in Metrc. Packages are fully removed from your Metrc Facility only once the Destination Facility clicks Accept.
- Changes made in Metrc are not showing in Canix. Return to Canix and use Refresh Metrc Data to pull the change through immediately.
Print a Metrc Transfer Manifest
Important Considerations for Print a Metrc Transfer Manifest
These “pro-tips” and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- The Manifest is printed directly from Metrc, not from Canix. Non-Metrc facilities generate their Manifest in Canix instead. See Configure a Non-Metrc Manifest.
- Register the Transfer first. After creating an Outgoing Transfer in Canix, you will complete the process by registering an Outgoing Transfer in Metrc, and only then print the Manifest.
- Transfers made to a non-Metrc licensee appear under Transfers > External rather than Transfers > Licensed.
- The Outgoing and Incoming tabs are separate. Select the Outgoing tab for a Transfer leaving your facility, or the Incoming tab if you are printing an Incoming Transfer.
- The Transfer must be highlighted before View Manifest works. Click the Transfer to select it first.
Step by Step Instructions for Print a Metrc Transfer Manifest
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
- Log into Metrc
- Navigate to Transfers > Licensed
- If this Transfer was made to a non-Metrc licensee, navigate to Transfers > External
- Select the Outgoing tab
- If you are printing an Incoming Transfer, select the Incoming tab
- Click on the Transfer you wish to print to select it
- With the Transfer highlighted, select View Manifest up above
- Your Manifest will open in a new window in PDF format where you can download or print it
Troubleshooting for Print a Metrc Transfer Manifest
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- The Transfer is not listed under Licensed. If the Transfer was made to a non-Metrc licensee, it is under Transfers > External. If it has not been registered yet, it is still under Transfers > Templates.
- View Manifest is greyed out or does nothing. Click on the Transfer to select it first. The Manifest only opens with the Transfer highlighted.
- The Manifest did not open. It opens in a new window in PDF format, so check for a blocked pop-up in your browser.
- You are looking at the wrong Transfer direction. The Outgoing and Incoming tabs hold different Transfers. Select the tab that matches the Transfer you need.
