Overview: Why We Use This Feature
Canix offers a variety of Package Compliance actions that send compliance data directly to Metrc or affect important compliance data in Standalone states, such as location or quantity. The process is mostly the same between Metrc and Non-Metrc submissions, unique differences will be called out in the documentation.
By logging these actions in Canix you can take advantage of the fastest way to find or scan packages and submit data, as well as optionally add non-compliance data that is important for your operation, and optionally send all submissions through approval to ensure more accurate data. These actions are all written to a detailed Activity History that covers all updates to a given Package over time.
In this article the following actions are covered, for Package Creation actions like Split and Combine, see this article here.
Adjust Packages: Use Canix's Adjust Packages feature to record adjustments for Package waste, moisture loss, spillage, loss of product, or simply to adjust the weight of a Package for any reason without altering anything else. This can be done on a single Package, or in bulk to adjust multiple Packages at once.
Change Package Locations: Use Change Location to track the movement of Packages in your facility. This is critical data to have accurate in the event of an audit, but it’s also critical for efficiently finding and moving inventory from storage to processing to fulfillment.
Changing Package Item: Sometimes a Package may be created with the incorrect Item assigned.. Canix has added the option to bulk change the item associated with a package and send this change with Metrc.
Discontinue Packages (Metrc Only): “Discontinuing” a Package allows for that Package to be deleted, if it has not been used or edited in any way yet (no transfers, adjustments, repackaging or sales). When taking this action in Canix, any COGS attributed to the Package will be returned to the original source packages when the package is discontinued. Any non-cannabis inventory applied to the package will be returned to non-cannabis inventory quantities. This ensures cost and inventory data maintains 100% accuracy when discontinuing a package is required.
Finish Packages: After a package has been depleted (i.e., the weight is 0), you can "finish" the Package to remove it from your active inventory in Canix.
Reactivate Finished Packages: Packages that have been mistakenly finished in Canix can be Reactivated. For non-Metrc facilities, this can be done directly in Canix. For Metrc facilities, this can be done in Metrc. This restores accidentally finished or deactivated packages, such as when non-Metrc facilities may have accidentally finished packages without first adjusting to 0.
Marking Packages as Finished Goods in New York Metrc: New York's Metrc implementation requires operators to identify whether each package is a Finished Good. Finished Goods must be associated with a Retail Item ID, while non-finished goods do not. To support this requirement, Canix includes a Finished Good toggle in all package creation flows for New York facilities and displays this status throughout the application for clear visibility and compliance.
Remediate Packages: When a cannabis Package fails testing, it can sometimes be remediated. Remediation refers to the sequence of steps used to correct the testing issue, so that the Package passes testing on the 2nd time around. This allows the inventory to be salvaged and used in future processing or sales orders. Not all Packages that fail test results can be remediated. It depends on the type of test failure, and the regulations in your specific state. Metrc and state cannabis agencies publish documentation like this Massachusetts doc that describe the rules around remediation in more detail. A couple examples of remediation scenarios: Flower fails for water activity (Remediation > Drying process), Shake/Trim fails for microbials (Remediation > irradiation, microbial filtration or heat treatment might be used). Once the Package is remediated, the Testing Status of the package will change to “Remediated”. This Testing Status allows for the package to be retested. Tests can be submitted in Canix.
Glossary
- Package: A tagged unit of tracked inventory in Canix and, where applicable, in Metrc.
- Package Tag: The unique tag identifier assigned to a Package.
- Item: The product definition (Item Name, Item Type, Strain) associated with a Package.
- Metrc: The state-mandated seed-to-sale traceability system that Canix syncs with in certain states.
- Standalone: A facility that is not integrated with Metrc.
- Adjustment: A recorded change to a Package's quantity for waste, moisture loss, spillage, loss of product, or any other reason.
- View: Active / View: Finished: The saved views on the Packages table used to display active versus finished/deactivated inventory.
- Activity History: The per-package log of changes, used to track adjustments, item changes, and other package events.
- Refresh Metrc Data: The Canix action that pulls the latest data from Metrc so changes made in Metrc appear in Canix immediately.
- Discontinue Packages: A Canix action that deactivates an unused package natively in Canix and returns its COGS and quantities to the appropriate source packages.
- COGS (Cost of Goods Sold): The tracked cost associated with a package. When a package is discontinued, its COGS is returned to the parent/source package(s) proportionally.
- Source / Parent Package: The package(s) a discontinued package originated from, to which COGS and quantities are returned.
- Non-Cannabis Inventory: Non-cannabis inputs deducted from their original lots; returned to those lots when a package is discontinued.
- Finish / Deactivate: Removing a Package from active inventory. "Finish" is Metrc terminology; "Deactivate" is Canix terminology for non-Metrc facilities.
- Reactivate / Unfinish: Restoring a previously finished or deactivated Package to Active status.
- Finished Good: A New York Metrc designation indicating a package is a finished good. Finished Goods require a Retail Item ID in Metrc.
- Retail Item ID: The Metrc identifier that must be associated with a Finished Good.
- Remediation: A compliance process to correct or treat a package (e.g., additional drying) so it can be brought back into a compliant state.
- Package Adjustment: Reducing a package's quantity to account for changes such as moisture loss during remediation.
- Remediation Method: The remediation method entered on the package. There are accepted Methods in Metrc, but these are not available in their API to sync the right methods for each state and facility type. Ensure the method entered is exactly as used in Metrc previously (i.e. Drying, Destruction).
- Remediated: The test status a package reaches once the remediation has been processed in Metrc.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Each Action
Adjust Packages
Important Considerations for Adjust Packages
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Field requirements: Date Adjusted and Reason for Adjustment are required; Notes are optional.
- Logic constraint: You must select Apply after updating each field for the changes to take effect across all selected packages. This step is not necessary when adjusting a single package.
- Logic constraint: You can log the change either by entering the Adjustment Quantity or the New Quantity — the other value calculates automatically. Only one is needed.
- Best practice: If each package needs different Adjustment Details, skip Apply and edit each package individually instead.
- Best practice: Adjust down to 0 before finishing a package.
Step by Step Instructions for Adjust Packages
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
-
Select a single Package, or select multiple Packages simultaneously to adjust in bulk
- We suggest using filters to narrow your search (by Tag, Item, Strain, etc.)
- To select multiple sequential packages at once, make your first selection then hold down the shift key when you select the last package in the grouping
- Select Actions > Adjust Packages
-
Complete all required fields:
- Date Adjusted
- Reason for Adjustment
- Notes (optional)
- You must select Apply after updating each field to apply these changes
- When adjusting multiple packages, this applies the changes to all packages at once; this step is not necessary if only adjusting one package
- If you are adjusting multiple Packages at once but want each Package to have different Adjustment Details, you can skip this step and simply click into each Package to edit separately as seen in a later step
- If you'd like to adjust additional Packages at the same time, select Add Package to add another
- Click the box containing the Package tag to edit the Package Quantity to add or remove quantity; carefully repeat this process using the steps below for each Package
- Select the edit pen icon to input the new quantity for the Package:
-
There are 2 ways to log the adjustment:
- Enter the Adjustment Quantity (amount being added or subtracted, depending on your selection above), which will automatically calculate to update the New Quantity
- Or, just enter the New Quantity, which will automatically calculate the Adjusted Quantity in the gray text below
- If you have already entered and applied Adjustment Details on the main page, these will pre-fill when editing per Package; if you are adjusting multiple Packages, this window will allow you to apply different Adjustment Details to each Package if needed
- After logging the changes in quantity, select Save, then repeat these steps for each package on your list.
-
Once completed, carefully review all details for accuracy and if everything is correct, select Submit
- To view submitted adjustments navigate to Analyze & Support > Business Intelligence and find the report “Package Adjustments Over Time”
- Or to view adjustments on a single tag, navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > find the package, select and view activity history to see all changes made to the package.
Troubleshooting for Adjust Packages
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Adjustment details did not apply to all packages. You must select Apply after updating each field. Without it, the details are not pushed to the other selected Packages.
- The quantity math looks wrong. Enter either the Adjustment Quantity or the New Quantity — not both. Each one automatically calculates the other.
- Can't find an adjustment you made. Check Reporting > Inventory > Package Adjustments Over Time, or open the Package Tag from View: Active and select See Activity History.
Change Package Locations
Important Considerations for Change Package Locations
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Field requirement: Date may be a required field depending on your state's compliance standards.
- Logic constraint: Depending on the compliance standards of your state, some functionality may not be available.
- Best practice: Set the Location during package creation or splitting when you can, rather than relocating after the fact.
- Best practice: Remove a package from the list with the red X instead of cancelling and rebuilding your selection.
Step by Step Instructions for Change Package Locations
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
Note: You can also add/change the Package Location when creating and splitting packages.
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
- Select one or more Packages that need to be relocated
- Navigate to Actions > Change Location
-
Enter a New Location
- Need to remove a Package from the list? Simply select the Red trash icon next to the Package you need to remove.
- Date may be a required field depending on your state's compliance standards. Defaults to Today if nothing is selected.
- Confirm location is set as desired and select “Submit”
Troubleshooting for Change Package Locations
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- A location change did not submit. Date may be a required field depending on your state's compliance standards; complete it and resubmit.
- The wrong package is included in the change. Select the red X next to that package to remove it from the list before submitting.
- You're unsure whether the change reached Metrc. Metrc facilities receive a notification reading "Submitting location change of # packages to Metrc"; non-Metrc facilities receive "The location has been changed for # packages."
Changing Package Item
Important Considerations for Change Package Item
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- 24 hour limit in Metrc: In a Metrc facility you cannot change a Package's Item if it was created over 24 hours ago, or if it is already on a sales/purchase order or transfer.
- Packages must be Active: and not allocated to a Sales Order or Purchase Order.
- Costs are not reverted: Changing the Item does not automatically apply the corrected costs. To do this, first remove the incorrect costs that were applied to the Package, and then re-apply the corrected Non-Cannabis Inventory and costs.
- Units must match: the units of the Item currently on the Package must match the units of the Item you are changing to. If you created a weight based Item with the wrong name, you cannot then change it to an Each based Item afterwards.
- Confirm the change landed by reviewing the package's Activity History.
Step by Step Instructions for Change Package Item
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
- Select one or more packages, then select Actions > Change Item Note: Packages must be Active and not allocated to a Sales Order or Purchase Order.
- A modal will appear where users can begin typing to search for a new Item Name, Item Type, or Strain. New Items can be applied to all packages selected by using the Item field at the top and selecting Apply to All. Or individually search and apply items to each package.
- Once all packages have new items assigned, select Submit
These changes will reflect in the Activity History for each package for tracking purposes.
Troubleshooting for Change Package Item
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- The Change Item option is unavailable or fails. In a Metrc facility you cannot change a Package's Item if it was created over 24 hours ago, or if it is already on a sales/purchase order or transfer.
- A package is missing from the selection. Packages must be Active and not allocated to a Sales Order or Purchase Order to be eligible.
- You can't confirm the item change went through. Open the package and review its Activity History, where the change is recorded for tracking purposes.
Discontinue Packages (Metrc Only)
Important Considerations for Discontinue Packages
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Metrc only allows discontinuing unused packages. Submission logic follows Metrc's handling of quantity and tag history. Use Discontinue Packages only for packages that have not yet been used. Packages that have been adjusted, transferred, repackaged, or sold cannot be discontinued.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
- Discontinue in error cases as soon as they are identified (created in error, lost, damaged, or no longer usable) to keep inventory and COGS records complete and accurate.
- COGS and Non-Cannabis Inventory applied to Packages will be reverted after a Package is Discontinued.
Step by Step Instructions for Discontinue Packages
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
- Initiate Action: Select the relevant Package(s) and then select “Discontinue Package(s)”
- Input Data: Review the data in the confirmation modal before confirming, the following data will be displayed. Use the bin icon to remove a package, and the clipboard icon to see the full history of a package.
- Package Tag
- Item
- Package Quantity
- Location
- Total COGS being returned to Source Packages
- Source Quantity being Returned
- Non-Cannabis Inventory being returned
-
Review & Save: Confirm all entries are correct before finalizing.
-
If Successful:
- Package Status is marked as Discontinued
-
COGS are returned to the parent/source package(s) proportionally, including:
- Cannabis COGS
- Non-Cannabis COGS
- Labor COGS
- Quantities are returned to the source package(s)
- Package is removed from Related Packages card on the source package
-
Activity History logs the discontinuation, including:
- Package Discontinued
- Quantity Returned
- COGS Returned
- Non-Cannabis Items Returned
- Submission logged in the Metrc Submissions table
- Success toast message appears: “Packages Discontinued Successfully”
-
If Failed:
- COGS and quantity are not returned
- Package status remains unchanged
- Readable error message displayed
- Error is logged in the Submissions table
-
If Successful:
Troubleshooting for Discontinue Packages
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Package already used: If you attempt to discontinue a package that has already been used in any capacity (adjusted, transferred, repackaged, or sold), Metrc will return an error. Only unused packages can be discontinued.
- Missing action: If you cannot see the "Discontinue Packages" option, verify your role includes the Inventory > Packages > Deactivate & Reactivate Packages permission, or contact your Canix admin.
-
Discontinuation Fails: if the action itself fails, then the following will occur, use the error message and submission log to understand why the failure occurred and retry:
- COGS and quantity are not returned.
- Package status remains unchanged.
- A readable error message is displayed.
- The error is logged in the Submissions table.
Finish / Deactivate Packages
Important Considerations for Finish / Deactivate Packages
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Finish Date or Deactivation Date must be selected.
- Metrc facilities require that the Package quantity is 0 before finishing a Package.
- Non-Metrc facilities can finish a Package with a quantity that is not 0, but we still recommend adjusting to 0 first.
- Once a package has been marked as Finished in a Metrc facility, it cannot be reactivated in Canix — the reversal must happen in Metrc.
- Best practice: Because the Metrc reversal path is manual, double-check your selection before submitting a bulk finish.
Step by Step Instructions for Finish / Deactivate Packages
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
-
Initiate Action: Select a single Package, or select multiple Packages simultaneously to finish/deactivate in bulk. Then Select Actions > Finish Packages or Deactivate Packages
- We suggest using filters to narrow your search (by Tag, Item, Strain, etc.)
- To select multiple sequential packages at once, make your first selection then hold down the shift key when you select the last package in the grouping
- From the new window, confirm the correct Package(s) have been selected, select a Finish Date or Deactivation Date and then select “Deactivate”.
- View Finished Packages. Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Finished
Troubleshooting for Finish / Deactivate Packages
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- A Package cannot be finished. Metrc facilities require the Package quantity to be 0 before finishing. Use Adjust Packages to bring the quantity to 0 first.
- The action is labeled differently than expected. Metrc facilities see "Finish Packages"; non-Metrc facilities see "Deactivate Packages."
- A finished package can't be found. Navigate to Inventory > Packages > View: Finished.
Reactivate Finished Packages
Important Considerations for Reactivate Finished Packages
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Non-Metrc facilities reactivate in the Canix Web Application; Metrc facilities must unfinish the package directly in Metrc.
- Filter the Finished view by Quantity ("Does not equal" / "0") to isolate packages that were deactivated before being adjusted to 0.
- After unfinishing in Metrc, Packages make take up to 10 minutes to be viewable in Canix. In Canix use the M refresh icon to see the last time data has been synced from Metrc.
Step by Step Instructions for Reactivate Finished Packages
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow.
For Non-Metrc Facilities
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Finished
-
Select the Packages you wish to reactivate; this can also be done in bulk. After selecting which Packages to restore, select Actions > Reactivate Packages.
- We suggest using Filters to narrow your search; for example, if you only wish to restore packages that were deactivated with more than 0 quantity remaining, use the Quantity column's filter to select "Does not equal" and "0" and click Apply so that you are only viewing Finished packages with more than 0
- From the modal, confirm the correct Package(s) have been selected, Select Reactivate and then Submit.
For Metrc Facilities
To revert Finish Package submissions, this must be done directly in Metrc.
- Log into Metrc
- From the top menu, navigate to Packages
- Select the tab Inactive
-
Select the Package to be Unfinished by clicking on it
- To Unfinish multiple Packages at once, hold shift when selecting the additional Packages
- In the new window, confirm the correct Package(s) have been selected
- Select Unfinish Packages
- Return to Canix and Refresh Metrc Data to show these changes in Canix immediately
- View Reactivated Packages. Navigate to Inventory > Packages > View: Active
Troubleshooting for Reactivate Finished Packages
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- A Package was finished by mistake. For non-Metrc facilities, reactivate it from Inventory > Packages > View: Finished using Actions > Reactivate Packages. For Metrc facilities, the package must be unfinished directly in Metrc — once marked Finished in a Metrc facility, it cannot be reactivated in Canix.
- Packages unfinished in Metrc are not showing in Canix. Return to Canix and use Refresh Metrc Data to pull the change through immediately.
- Too many finished packages to sort through. Use the Quantity column's filter, select "Does not equal" and "0," and click Apply so you are only viewing Finished packages with more than 0 remaining.
Marking Packages as Finished Goods in New York Metrc
Important Considerations for Marking Packages as Finished Goods in New York Metrc
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Finished Goods require a Retail Item ID in Metrc in New York.
- The toggle appears only for New York Metrc facilities, and only in the Split Package, Combine Package, and Create Package from Manufacturing Run flows. For all other states, the toggle and the Finished Good column are hidden.
- The setting is saved per item, so the next package created with the same item inherits the last used value. Items with no previously stored value default to OFF.
- Use the sortable, filterable Finished Good column in the Packages Table to spot-check designations before an audit or QA review.
Step by Step Instructions for Marking Packages as Finished Goods in New York Metrc
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow:
The Finished Good toggle is available only for users operating in New York Metrc facilities. It appears in the following package creation and modification workflows:
- Split Package: on the left hand side, and from within the output package detail panel.
- Combine Package: scroll to the bottom right after editing an output package.
- Create Package from Manufacturing Run: when adding or editing an output package.
For all other states, the toggle and Finished Good column are hidden.
How to mark a package as a Finished Good:
- Open any supported package creation flow in a New York facility. For example Split Package, or Combine Package.
- Under the Package Details section, locate the Finished Good toggle.
- Enable the toggle to mark the package as a Finished Good.
- Continue completing the flow as usual.
Toggling Finished Goods after Package Creation:
- Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory > View: Active
- Select your Packages and then select Actions > Toggle Finished Goods
- Confirm your selections and press “Toggle”
- Use the “Finished Good” column on the Packages table to view your Finished Goods Packages.
What the toggle does:
- When enabled, Canix posts IsFinishedGood: true to the Metrc API, and the Finished Good setting is saved per item, so the next package created with the same item defaults to Enabled.
- When disabled, Canix posts IsFinishedGood: false, and the item continues to default to Disabled until changed.
- If an item has no previously stored Finished Good value, the toggle defaults to OFF.
Where Finished Good status is displayed:
- Packages Table: A new Finished Good column appears for New York accounts. A checkmark icon indicates the package is a Finished Good; -- indicates it is not. The column is sortable and filterable, and is placed after "Package Tag" and before "Item Name."
- Package Details Page: The header section includes a static Finished Good field reading either "Finished Good: Yes" or "Finished Good: No," providing quick visibility during audits, QA, and package reviews.
Troubleshooting for Marking Packages as Finished Goods in New York Metrc
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- The Finished Good toggle or column is missing. The toggle appears only for New York Metrc facilities, and only in the Split Package, Combine Package, and Create Package from Manufacturing Run flows. For all other states it is intentionally hidden.
- A new package unexpectedly defaults to Finished Good. The setting is stored per item. If a previous package with that item was created with the toggle enabled, the item will default to Enabled until changed.
- Metrc rejects a package marked as a Finished Good. Finished Goods require a Retail Item ID in Metrc. Confirm the associated item has one before resubmitting.
Remediate Packages
Important Considerations for Remediate Packages
Step by Step Instructions for Remediate Packages
Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete the workflow.
- Access the Module: Navigate to Inventory Management > Cannabis Inventory.
- Initiate Action: Select the Package(s) for Remediation. Use the Metrc Testing Status column to filter any Packages that have failed testing. Certain Item Types cannot be remediated, use Item Type to filter to Flower, Shake/Trim and other raw materials that can be remediated.
- Input Data: Enter the Date of remediation completion, the method used (this is a preset list you’ll find in your Metrc account) and an explanation of the steps used to complete the remediation.
- Review & Save: Confirm all entries are correct before finalizing.
Troubleshooting for Remediate Packages
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Item Types: Not all Item Types can be remediated, you’ll receive an error message and error submission in Canix when attempting to remediate an invalid Item Type.
- Remediation Methods: Remediation Methods are set by the state, an exact remediation method that is valid in your state must be used for the submission to succeed.
