Overview: Why We Use This Feature
Occasionally a Package recorded in Metrc needs to be deleted from the record. For example: a package was created in error
- The package is lost, damaged, or no longer usable
“Discontinuing” a Package allows for that Package to be deleted, if it has not been used or edited in any way yet (no transfers, adjustments, repackaging or sales). When taking this action in Canix, any COGS attributed to the Package will be returned to the original source packages when the package is discontinued. Any non-cannabis inventory applied to the package will be returned to non-cannabis inventory quantities. This ensures cost and inventory data maintains 100% accuracy when discontinuing a package is required.
Glossary
- Discontinue Packages: A Canix action that deactivates an unused package natively in Canix and returns its COGS and quantities to the appropriate source packages.
- COGS (Cost of Goods Sold): The tracked cost associated with a package. When a package is discontinued, its COGS is returned to the parent/source package(s) proportionally.
- Source / Parent Package: The package(s) a discontinued package originated from, to which COGS and quantities are returned.
- Non-Cannabis Inventory: Non-cannabis inputs deducted from their original lots; returned to those lots when a package is discontinued.

Important Considerations
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
- Metrc only allows discontinuing unused packages. Submission logic follows Metrc's handling of quantity and tag history. Use Discontinue Packages only for packages that have not yet been used. Packages that have been adjusted, transferred, repackaged, or sold cannot be discontinued.
- Discontinue in error cases as soon as they are identified (created in error, lost, damaged, or no longer usable) to keep inventory and COGS records complete and accurate.
- COGS and Non-Cannabis Inventory applied to Packages will be reverted after a Package is Discontinued.
System Impacts & Dependencies
Discontinuing a package triggers updates elsewhere. When a package is successfully discontinued:
| Action Taken | Impacted Area | Description of Change |
|---|---|---|
| Package is discontinued | Package status | Package is marked as Discontinued and is removed from the Related Packages card on the source package. You will no longer see the package in Metrc. |
| Package is discontinued | Source / parent package(s) | COGS are returned to the parent/source package(s) proportionally, including Cannabis COGS, Non-Cannabis COGS, and Labor COGS. Quantities are returned to the source package(s). |
| Package is discontinued | Activity History | Activity History logs the discontinuation, including Package Discontinued, Quantity Returned, COGS Returned, and Non-Cannabis Items Returned. |
| Package is discontinued | Metrc Submissions table | Submission is logged in the Metrc Submissions table. A success toast message appears: "Packages Discontinued Successfully". |
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Package already used: If you attempt to discontinue a package that has already been used in any capacity (adjusted, transferred, repackaged, or sold), Metrc will return an error. Only unused packages can be discontinued.
- Missing action: If you cannot see the "Discontinue Packages" option, verify your role includes the Inventory > Packages > Deactivate & Reactivate Packages permission, or contact your Canix admin.
-
Discontinuation Fails: if the action itself fails, then the following will occur, use the error message and submission log to understand why the failure occurred and retry:
- COGS and quantity are not returned.
- Package status remains unchanged.
- A readable error message is displayed.
- The error is logged in the Submissions table.
