Overview: Why We Use These Features

Canix offers a set of Plant actions for moving plants through their growth stages and tracking where they sit in your facility. Some of these actions send compliance data directly to Metrc, while others track operational detail in Canix only. These differences will be mentioned in the documentation here.

By logging these actions in Canix you can take advantage of the fastest way to find or scan plant tags and update them in bulk, track your own cultivation benchmarks alongside the state's compliance phases, and correct errors without re-doing your work. These actions are all written to a detailed Activity History that tracks cultivation activity from plant batch through growth phase changes to harvest.

Because growth phase changes and location changes usually happen at the same time, many of these actions let you update a combination of Location, Growth Phase and Custom Growth Phase together, so you rarely need to submit them separately.

In this article the following actions are covered. For creating Plant Batches, see Create Plantings. For destroying plants and logging waste, see Create Waste & Destroy Plants.

Update Growth Phase from Immature to Vegetative: Once your plants meet the threshold for the Vegetative phase (typically indicated by height, for example 8 inches tall), you'll need to update the growth phase to Vegetative. Typically this is also the phase where survival odds increase significantly and most states require individual tagging.

Update Growth Phase from Vegetative to Flowering: Check your state regulations for the definition of Flowering. Some states have specific rules about the size of pistils, others define flowering based on the lighting schedule or the grower’s intent. This action allows you to move Plants from the Vegetative to Flowering phases.

Custom Growth Phases: Customize stages throughout cultivation, outside of state compliance growth phases. Create Custom Growth Phases to track various benchmarks during the cultivation process. Custom Growth Phases can be assigned to plants or plant batches from the Actions button in reporting, or when changing compliance growth phases.

Change Plant Batch & Plant Location: Canix allows you to easily change the Location of Plants or Plant Batches, individually or in bulk. This can be done with or without changing the growth phase. This is critical data to have accurate in the event of an audit, and it's also critical for efficiently finding and moving plants through your rooms.

Identify Mother Plants / Plant Batches: Easily label your Plants or Plant Batches as Mothers in Canix to allow them to be used to create Plant Batch from Mother. Note that in certain Metrc states this label does sync to Metrc as a growth phase change — see the Important Considerations for that action.

Revert Plants to Vegetative (Standalone, Non-Metrc Facilities Only): For Non-Metrc facilities, Canix offers a feature that allows users to move any tracked flowering plants in their facility back to the Vegetative Growth Phase. This action allows users to track the movement from Vegetative back to Flowering when a plant is doing well, or needs to be used as a mother plant. It can also be used as a tool to correct errors if a plant is moved unintentionally.

Glossary

• Plant: An individually tagged Vegetative, Flowering, or Mother Plant in Canix and, where applicable, in Metrc.
• Plant Batch: A group of Immature Plants tracked together under a single Batch Tag.
• Immature Plant / Planting: A plant within a Plant Batch that has not yet received an individual Plant Tag.
• Metrc: The state-mandated seed-to-sale traceability system that Canix syncs with in certain states.
• Standalone: A facility that is not integrated with Metrc.
• Growth Phase: The compliance stage of a Plant (Immature, Vegetative, or Flowering)
• Custom Growth Phase: A Canix-only sub-phase used to track benchmarks during cultivation, outside of state compliance growth phases.
• Custom Growth Phase Name: The name given to a new Custom Growth Phase.
• Previous Custom Growth Phase: The phase that precedes the one being created, used to establish order. Not required for the first phase created.
• Associated Growth Phase: The compliance phase (immature, vegetative, or flowering) that a Custom Growth Phase belongs to.
• Phase Change Date: The date entered when moving plants or batches to a new Custom Growth Phase.
• Plant Tag: The individual tag assigned to a Plant when it moves from Immature to Vegetative.
• Starting Plant Tag: The first tag in the sequence assigned when updating a Plant Batch from Immature to Vegetative. This automatically pre-fills with the next available tag.
• Growth Date: The date entered when Immature Plants became Vegetative.
• Flowering Date: The date entered when Vegetative Plants began Flowering.
• Vegetative Date: The date entered when reverting Flowering Plants back to Vegetative. This can be the original vegetative date or any back dated date including today's date.
• Mother Plant: A Vegetative Plant labeled as a Mother so it can be used to create Plant Batch from Mother. Used by non-CA facilities.
• Mother Plant Batch: A Plant Batch labeled as a Mother so it can be used to create Plant Batch from Mother. Used by CA facilities.
• Location History: The per-Plant Batch record of location changes, available to non-Metrc facilities.
• Submissions History: The Canix page used to view all Plant Batch Location Changes.
• Activity History: The per-record log of changes used to track plant and plant batch events.
• Refresh Metrc Data: The Canix action that pulls the latest data from Metrc so changes made in Metrc appear in Canix immediately.
• Metrc Submissions / User Submissions: The Canix pages used to review or check the status of submissions. Metrc facilities use Metrc Submissions; non-Metrc facilities use User Submissions.

Important Considerations for Update Growth Phase for Plants

These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:

• During the Immature to Vegetative process, each Plant will receive an individual Plant Tag to allow better tracking and independent updates.
• After updating the growth phase from Immature to Vegetative, you'll need to attach the new individual Plant Tags to each Vegetative Plant. For Metrc facilities, physically attach the assigned Metrc Plant Tags to each Plant. For Non-Metrc facilities, print and attach Plant Tags.
• Leave Amount to Update blank to update all Immature Plants in each Plant Batch.
• Note when Bulk Updating Growth Phase: The quantity entered into the Amount to Update field is the amount of plantings that you would like to update per Plant Batch. For the source of truth on how many plantings will be updated please pay attention to the Amount to Update field on each batch in the Vegetative Plants Summary on the right.
• To revert Update Growth Phase submissions in Metrc facilities, this must be done directly in Metrc. Any changes Metrc is willing to make will be synced back into Canix within 10 minutes.
• A good time to update Immature Plants to Vegetative is when they move out of trays and into permanent pots.
• To customize stages throughout cultivation, outside of state compliance growth phases, Create Custom Growth Phases on Plants to track various benchmarks during the cultivation process.

Step by Step Instructions for Update Growth Phase from Immature to Vegetative

Once Immature Plants in a Plant Batch reach a certain size and are more likely to survive, you'll need to update the growth phase to transition each surviving Immature Plant into a Vegetative Plant. Watch the demo video or follow the steps below to complete the workflow:

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Plant Batches > View: Active
2. Initiate Action: Select the Plant Batches changing Growth Phases and then select “Update Growth Phase”. “Update Growth Phase” should be used when the compliance phase is changing from Immature to Vegetative (or Immature to Flowering if in California).

3. Input Details: for Updating compliance phases, the new tag #s for the vegetative plants are required, as well as the date and new location for the plants. For Custom phases, only the new phase is required.

• Custom Growth Phase (optional): this is an optional Canix-only field for more granularity
• Amount to Update: leave this blank to update all Immature Plants in each Plant Batch
  • Note when Bulk Updating Growth Phase: The quantity entered into the Amount to Update field is the amount of plantings that you would like to update per Plant Batch. For the source of truth on how many plantings will be updated please pay attention to the Amount to Update field on each batch in the Vegetative Plants Summary on the right.
• Growth Date: enter the date these Immature Plants became Vegetative
• Location: enter the location of these newly Vegetative Plants
• Lot ID: this is an optional Canix-only field used to track Plants through Harvest & Packaging

4. Verify Details & Submit: Review all Plant Batch details to confirm accuracy before submitting. Select Submit. To view Vegetative Plants Navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Tracked Vegetative

After updating the growth phase from Immature to Vegetative, you'll need to attach the new individual Plant Tags to each Vegetative Plant.

• For Metrc facilities, physically attach the assigned Metrc Plant Tags to each Plant
• For Non-Metrc facilities, print and attach Plant Tags

Troubleshooting for Update Growth Phase for Plants

If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.

• More or fewer plantings updated than you expected. The quantity entered into Amount to Update is the amount of plantings per Plant Batch. For the source of truth on how many plantings will be updated, check the Amount to Update field on each batch in the Vegetative Plants Summary on the right. Leave it blank to update all Immature Plants in each Plant Batch.
• You want to track stages beyond Immature/Vegetative/Flowering. Create Custom Growth Phases on Plants to track various benchmarks during the cultivation process.
• A submission error is shown. Navigate to Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > Metrc / User Submissions and click on the submission to view details about the error.

These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:

• Updating Vegetative to Flowering in bulk requires the same updates be applied to all selected Plants.
• To revert Update Growth Phase submissions in Metrc facilities, this must be done directly in Metrc. Canix will sync back any changes Metrc are willing to make within 10 minutes.
• To customize stages throughout cultivation, outside of state compliance growth phases, Create Custom Growth Phases on Plants to track various benchmarks during the cultivation process.

Step by Step Instructions for Update Growth Phase from Vegetative to Flowering

Once Vegetative Plants begin to Flower, you'll need to update the growth phase to transition them into Flowering Plant. Watch the demo video or complete the steps below to complete the workflow:

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Tracked Vegetative
2. Initiate Action: Check the boxes next to each Vegetative Plant to select them — use filters to narrow your search, such as by Plant Batch, Location, or Strain. You can also scan tags directly into the tag field to scan > take action. Once the desired plants are selected choose Actions > Move Plants to Flowering

3. Input Details: Update the fields in the Change To Flowering window to apply to all selected Plants at once

• Flowering Date: Enter the date these Vegetative Plants began Flowering
• New Location (optional): Update if the location of these Plants has changed
• Custom Growth Phase (optional): this is an optional Canix-only field for more granularity

4. Review Details & Submit: Review all details to confirm accuracy before submitting. To view Flowering Plants  navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Tracked Flowering

Troubleshooting for Update Growth Phase from Vegetative to Flowering

If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.

• Bulk updates to Flowering applied the same values to every plant. Updating in bulk requires the same updates be applied to all selected Plants. Update them separately if each needs different values.
• You want to track stages beyond Immature/Vegetative/Flowering. Create Custom Growth Phases on Plants to track various benchmarks during the cultivation process.
• A submission error is shown. Navigate to Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > Metrc / User Submissions and click on the submission to view details about the error.

Important Considerations for Change Location

These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:

• Change Location is used when the compliance phase is not changing. For Location Changes that include phase compliance changes, for example Phase of Plants from Immature > Vegetative or Vegetative > Flowering there are options to also change the location from within those flows..
• The steps are identical for Metrc, BioTrack and Non-Metrc facilities, but the verbiage differs depending on the type of facility you are in.
• For Plant Batches, the plant batch must contain at least one immature plant.
• For Plants, this process is the same for all active plants and includes Tracked Vegetative, Flowering Plants, Tracked Mother Plants and Current Plants.
• The date field is required in certain states
• Location can also be updated when changing growth phases, so you may not need a separate location change.
• Custom Growth Phase can optionally be updated at the same time as the location.
• Need to remove a Plant or Plant Batch from the list? Simply select the Red X next to the one you need to remove.

Steps are identical for changing locations on both Plants and Plant Batches.

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Plants or Cultivation > Plant Batches.
2. Initiate Action: Select one or more Plant Batches or Plants that need to be relocated. Use the filters to find all the Plants associated with a specific room, strain or cycle. Select Batches/Plants and Click Actions > Change Location. If you do not select specific Batches/Plants, the location will be updated for all of the Batches/Plants loaded on the page.

3. Enter Details & Submit: Enter a New Location and Date and Custom Growth Phase (optional)
   • Note: If you are changing the Phase of Plants from Immature > Vegetative or Vegetative > Flowering there are options to also change the location from within those flows. Change Location is used when the compliance phase is not changing.
   • Need to remove a Plant Batch from the list? Simply select the Red trash icon next to the Plant Batch you need to remove

4. Verify Details & Submit: verify the plant list, date and location and then submit. If the incorrect location is submitted, simply resubmit with the corrected location.

Troubleshooting for Change Location

If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.

• A Plant Batch can't be relocated. The plant batch must contain at least one immature plant.
• A location change did not submit. Date may be a required field depending on your state's compliance standards; complete it and resubmit.
• The wrong plant or batch is included in the change. Select the red X next to that item to remove it from the list before submitting.
• You're unsure whether the change reached Metrc. Metrc facilities receive a notification reading "Submitting location change of # plant batches to Metrc" or "Submitting location changed for # plant(s) to Metrc"; non-Metrc facilities receive "The location has been changed for # plant batches" or "# plant(s)".
• You need to see when a Plant Batch changed Locations (non-Metrc). Select a Plant Batch, then select View Location History, or navigate to the Submissions History page to view all Plant Batch Location Changes.

• To create your first Custom Growth Phase, you will need to start with the initial associated plant type of immature.
• Think of Custom Growth Phases as sub-phases for your immature, vegetative (except CA) and flowering phases.
  • These are customizable and can be used however you see fit. Common use cases include, during the Immature Phase, tracking when plants moved from Clone Dome to 1 gallon pot, from 1 gallon to 5 gallon pot, into Vegetative (for CA customers), or from 3 nodes to 6 nodes. During the Flowering Phase, tracking when plants start to purple, start to produce trichomes, or reach first topping or Manicure.
• Custom Growth Phases can be created and rearranged to automatically suggest the next phase in the correct order when managing plant inventory.
• Custom Growth Phases can be assigned to plants or plant batches from the Actions button in reporting, or when changing compliance growth phases.
• Fields Required: Custom Growth Phase Name, Previous Custom Growth Phase (if not the first phase being created), and the Associated Growth Phase for which phase to find this custom stage in.

Step by Step Instructions: Creating Custom Growth Phases

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Cultivation Settings > Custom Growth Phases
2. Select “Create Custom Growth Phases”. To create your first Custom Growth Phase, you will need to start with the initial associated plant type of immature

3. Input the Required Details: Custom Growth Phase Name, Previous Custom Growth Phase (if not the first phase being created), and the Associated Growth Phase for which phase to find this custom stage in. If you are creating a sequence of phases, use the checkbox for “Create another custom growth phase” (this will open another modal for you to immediately create the next phase.

4. Select save, you’ll see the new custom phase populated in the table.

Step by Step Instructions: Re-order Custom Growth Phases

Custom Growth Phases can be created and rearranged to automatically suggest the next phase in the correct order when managing plant inventory. Follow the steps below to manage existing phases in your facility.

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Cultivation Settings > Custom Growth Phases
2. Select Actions > Reorder Custom Growth Phases

3. Rearrange the phases: A window will appear where you can rearrange the order of the Custom Growth Phases by Associated Growth Phase. Simply use the arrows to reorder them.

4. Select Save to save the changes made

Step by Step Instructions: Edit Custom Growth Phases

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Cultivation Settings > Custom Growth Phases
2. Select Phase: click on the blue hyperlinked name of the phase you would like to edit.

3. Edit Details: updated the phase name as desired.

4. Save: save the changes.

Step by Step Instructions: Apply Custom Growth Phases

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Plants or Plant Batches
2. Select Action > Change Custom Growth Phase

3. Input Phase & Date: A window will appear where you can select the New Custom Growth Phase and the Phase Change Date. Custom Growth phases can also be specified from within the compliance growth phase change flows.

4. Confirm and select “Change Phase”

Troubleshooting for Custom Growth Phases on Plants

If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.

• You can't create your first Custom Growth Phase. To create your first Custom Growth Phase, you will need to start with the initial associated plant type of immature.
• Canix suggests the wrong next phase. Custom Growth Phases can be rearranged to automatically suggest the next phase in the correct order. Navigate to Admin > Facility Data > Custom Growth Phases and select Actions > Reorder Custom Growth Phases.
• A Custom Growth Phase is attached to the wrong compliance phase. Select the Custom Growth Phase name in the table and select a new plant type from the side panel.
• The Custom Growth Phase you want isn't available on a plant. Custom Growth Phases are sub-phases of immature, vegetative (except CA) and flowering. Confirm the phase's Associated Growth Phase matches the compliance phase the plant is currently in.
• You can't find where the change was recorded. The change reflects in the Custom Growth Phase column on the Plants or Plant Batches table.

Important Considerations for Identify Mother Plants / Plant Batches

These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:

• Metrc Synchronization for Mother Plants: For customers with Metrc Facilities/Licenses that are part of their Canix Metrc-Integrated Account in the states listed below, applying the Toggle [plant(s)] to Mother action will cause Canix to change the growth phase of these plants from Vegetative to Mother. Any plant(s) with a Mother growth phase will be marked as a Mother in Canix by our Metrc syncs. Applicable states: OK, MI, NY, NJ, OR, KY, MO, MT, MD, MA, MN, OH, IL, RI, DC, NV, MS, ME, SD, WV, AK.
• California facilities can only label Plant Batches as Mothers. Non-CA facilities can only label Vegetative Plants as Mothers.
• The same Toggle action both applies and removes the Mother label. To remove it, simply reverse the steps for labeling as Mother.
• Label your Plants or Plant Batches as Mothers before you need them, so they're ready to be used to create Plant Batch from Mother.

Step by Step Instructions for Identify Mother Plants / Plant Batches

Follow these steps or watch the demo video to complete each workflow. Please note that the steps are identical for California vs non-California states, however in California these actions take place on the Plant Batches table, whereas in other states Vegetative Plants are marked as Mother Plants.

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Vegetative (Tracked)
2. Initiate Action: Select the check the boxes next to the individual Vegetative Plants to be toggled to Mother (labeled as Mother). We suggest using filters to narrow your search (by Strain, Plant Batch, etc.). And then select Actions > Toggle to Mother. Plants will be Toggled without a confirmation modal.

3. View Plants: The Plants you've selected are now labeled as Mother. To revert a Plant back to a non-Mother plant, simply use the Toggle action again.
   • To view mother plants navigate to Cultivation > Plants > Mother (Tracked)

Troubleshooting for Identify Mother Plants and Mother Plant Batches

If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.

• The Toggle Mother action isn't available on the record you selected. CA facilities can only label Plant Batches as Mothers; non-CA facilities can only label Vegetative Plants as Mothers.
• The plant's growth phase changed after toggling to Mother. For Metrc-integrated accounts in OK, MI, NY, NJ, OR, KY, MO, MT, MD, MA, MN, OH, IL, RI, DC, NV, MS, ME, SD, WV, and AK, Canix changes the growth phase from Vegetative to Mother when the toggle is applied. This is expected behavior.
• You need to remove the Mother label. Simply reverse the steps for labeling as Mother — navigate to the Mother Plant or Mother Plant Batch, check the box, and select Actions > Toggle Mother or Toggle to Mother to remove the tag.
• You can't find your Mother Plants or Batches. CA facilities: Plants > Plant Batches > Active Mother Plant Batches. Non-CA facilities: Plants > Plants > View: Mother Plants (Tracked). You can also scroll right on the Active or Vegetative (Tracked) views to find the "Is Mother?" or "Mother Plant?" column.
• A Mother isn't available as a source when creating a Plant Batch from Mother. Confirm the record carries the Mother label and is the correct record type for your state — Plant Batches for CA, Vegetative Plants for non-CA.

Important Considerations for Revert Plants to Vegetative

These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:

• Availability: This feature is for Non-Metrc facilities only. Metrc facilities must revert growth phase changes directly in Metrc.
• Field requirement: A Vegetative Date must be selected. This can be the original vegetative date or any back dated date including today's date.
• Logic constraint: Only Vegetative Custom Growth Phases should be available during this action.
• Logic constraint: Mother plants will be marked as a Mother plant again when reverted to Vegetative.
• Best practice: Use this action to track the movement from Vegetative back to Flowering when a plant is doing well, or needs to be used as a mother plant. It can also be used as a tool to correct errors if a plant is moved unintentionally.
• Best practice: If the plant location will also be changing, select a New Location during this action rather than doing a separate location change.

Step by Step Instructions for Revert Plants to Vegetative (Standalone, Non-Metrc Facilities Only)

1. Navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Flowering (Tracked)
2. Initiate Action: Select one or more Tracked Flowering plants to be moved back to Veg. Select Actions > Revert to Vegetative.
   • Pro Tip: Take note of the Vegetative date before initiating the action. You’ll need to fill it when completing the action.

3. Input Details: Revert To Vegetative Growth Phase by selecting a Vegetative Date, Location and custom growth phase.. This can be the original vegetative date or any back dated date including today's date. Note: Mother plants will be marked as a Mother plant again when reverted to Vegetative

4. Verify Details & Select Change Phase: View Reverted Plants. Selected plants will now be found in Plants > View: Vegetative (Tracked)

Troubleshooting for Revert Plants to Vegetative

If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.

• The Revert to Vegetative action isn't available. This feature is for Non-Metrc facilities only. Metrc facilities must revert the growth phase directly in Metrc, then Refresh Metrc Data in Canix.
• The Custom Growth Phase you want isn't listed. Only Vegetative Custom Growth Phases should be available during this action.
• A Mother plant lost its designation. Mother plants will be marked as a Mother plant again when reverted to Vegetative.
• You can't find the reverted plants. Selected plants will now be found in Plants > View: Vegetative (Tracked).
