Overview: Why We Use This Feature
When Plants die or fail to thrive, you will need to destroy them to remove them from your Canix inventory. Canix also helps you and your team to maintain pristine records and stay compliant by offering the functionality to generate and view Waste for Plants and Plant Batches. Both actions write to the Plant or Plant Batch record in Canix and submit to your compliance system, so your active Plant counts and your Waste records stay aligned with the state. Plant and Plant Batch Waste created in Canix is sent directly to Metrc as of 01/01/2025. The process is mostly the same between Metrc and Non-Metrc submissions, unique differences will be called out in the documentation.
Each of these actions can be run on a single record or in bulk, using filters and shift-selection to act on many Plants or Plant Batches at once. Selecting several records at once associates one Waste log with all of them, which keeps a room-level or table-level cleanup to a single entry instead of many. Every action is recorded to the record’s Activity History and posts a submission you can check afterward.
Create Plant Batch Waste: Log Waste against one or more Plant Batches without changing the Plant count. Use this when material leaves an Immature Batch but no Plants are being removed from inventory.
Destroy Immature Plants: Immature Plants are destroyed from the Plant Batch they belong to, by entering the number of Plants to remove rather than by selecting individual tags. Follow these steps to destroy Plants that are still in the Immature phase.
Destroy Mature Plants and Create Plant Waste: Canix provides the option to both Destroy the Plant(s) and Create Waste during this process. Destroying Mature Plants also requires that you create Waste at the time of destruction, and the same screen is used to record Waste on Vegetative or Flowering Plants that you are not destroying.
Restore Destroyed Plants (Non-Metrc Facilities): In non-Metrc facilities you may restore destroyed plants to correct errors that may have been made when logging destruction. To correct an error in a Metrc facility, you will need to reach out to Metrc.
Glossary
- Plant: An individually tagged Vegetative, Flowering, or Mother Plant in Canix and, where applicable, in Metrc.
- Plant Batch: A group of Immature Plants tracked together under a single Batch Tag.
- Immature Plant / Planting: A plant within a Plant Batch that has not yet received an individual Plant Tag.
- Metrc: The state-mandated seed-to-sale traceability system that Canix syncs with in certain states.
- Standalone: A facility that is not integrated with Metrc.
- Batch Tag / Batch Name: The tag assigned to a new Plant Batch to identify it.
- Plant Tag: The individual tag assigned to a Plant when it moves from Immature to Vegetative.
- Destroy Plantings: The action used to destroy Immature Plants within a Plant Batch.
- Destroy & Create Waste: The action used to destroy Vegetative or Flowering Plants, which also creates the required Plant Waste. This same action is used to create waste only.
- Mixed Material: A required field when logging Plant or Plant Batch Waste.
- Disposal Method: A required field when logging Plant or Plant Batch Waste.
- View: Active / Inactive: The saved views on the Plant Batches table.
- Activity History: The per-record log of changes used to track plant and plant batch events.
- Metrc Submissions / User Submissions: The Canix pages used to review or check the status of submissions. Metrc facilities use Metrc Submissions; non-Metrc facilities use User Submissions.
Prerequisites & Setup
Before beginning, ensure the following requirements are met:
- Permissions: the following permissions control Plant Compliance actions and are located in Analyze & Support > Admin & Settings > Permission Groups > [Group Name] > Action Permissions > Plants:
- Destroy Plant Batches and Plants: destruction permission specifically, waste can be logged with the Maintain Plants permission.
- Create Plantings: creating batch from mother, from clone/seed, and from packages of clones

Important Considerations for Destroy Plants and Create Plant Waste
These "pro-tips" and warnings help avoid common pitfalls:
Destroying and creating waste together
- Destroying Vegetative or Flowering Plants will also require you to enter Plant Waste at the time of destruction, so both are handled through the Destroy & Create Waste action.
- The Destroy Plants checkbox determines the outcome of that action. Check the box to Destroy Plants — not checking this will create Waste and not Destroy. Do not check the box unless you wish to Destroy them at the same time.
- Note: When creating Waste and Destroying one or more plants in Canix this will show as two separate submissions as these are two different actions.
Waste
- Plant and Plant Batch Waste created in Canix is sent directly to Metrc as of 01/01/2025.
- For Metrc facilities creating Plant Waste without destroying them at the same time, submitting this Waste will automatically email the user a .csv file to Upload Plant Waste to Metrc. You must complete this step in Metrc to upload the waste to Metrc and remain compliant.
- Creating Waste for multiple Plants or Plant Batches will associate the same Waste log with all of them.
- Field requirements: Disposal Method, Total Waste Weight & Units, Waste Reason, Waste Entry Date, Mixed Material, and Notes.
- Best practice: Creating Plant Waste from a Harvest is done at a later time through the process Create Harvest Waste.
Destruction
- Once all Plants in a Plant Batch have been destroyed, the Plant Batch will automatically become Inactive.
- Reverting a plant destruction is available to Non-Metrc facilities only. Metrc facilities will need to reach out to Metrc Support directly to request that plants be restored.
- Field requirements: Amount to Destroy, Waste Entry Date, and Reason notes.
Selecting records
- Use the filters to narrow down your search (by Plant Batch, Strain, Location) before selecting in bulk.
- To select multiple consecutive Plant Batches or Plants, check the box of the first one then hold shift when selecting the last one; review your selections.
- Review your selections to confirm accuracy before opening the form.
Step by Step Instructions for Destroy Plants and Create Plant Waste

Create Plant Batch Waste
Use this when logging waste against a Plant Batch without destroying plantings. Watch the demo video or follow the steps to complete the workflows:
- Navigate to Cultivation > Plant Batches > View: Active

Select Plant Batches: Use the filters to narrow down your search (by Plant Batch, Strain, Location, etc.). Once filtered, check the boxes next to each Plant Batch to select them
- This can be done in bulk by selecting multiple Plant Batches to create waste for at once
- Creating Waste for multiple Plant Batches will associate the same Waste log with all of them
- To select multiple consecutive Plant Batches, check the box of the first consecutive Plant Batch then hold shift when selecting the last Plant Batch
- Start Action: Select Actions > Create Plant Batch Waste
- Input Details: the required fields are as follows:
- Enter Disposal Method
- Enter Total Waste Weight & Units
- Enter Waste Reason
- Enter Waste Entry Date
- Enter Mixed Material
- Enter Notes
- Review & Submit: confirm details are correct and then select “Submit”.
Destroy Immature Plants

- Navigate to Cultivation > Plant Batches > View: Active

Select Plant Batches: If needed, use the filters to narrow down your search and check the boxes next to each Plant Batch to select them.
- This can be done in bulk by selecting multiple Plant Batches to Destroy Plantings in at once
- To select multiple consecutive Plant Batches, check the box of the first consecutive Plant Batch then hold shift when selecting the last Plant Batch; review your selections
- Start Action: Select Actions > Destroy Plantings
- Input Details: Carefully complete all required fields, including Amount to Destroy, Waste Entry Date, and Reason notes.
- Review & Submit: Verify everything looks correct, then select Submit
Destroy Mature Plants and Create Plant Waste
Destroying Mature Plants also requires that you create waste at the time of destruction, so Canix provides the option to both Destroy the Plant(s) and Create Waste through the same action. The Destroy Plants checkbox in step 8 determines which you are doing. Watch the demo video or follow the steps below to complete the workflow:
- Navigate to Cultivation > Plants, select the Vegetative, Flowering or Mother Plant view depending on what you are logging waste for. Use filters to find the plants you’re looking for. To select in bulk, check the box of the first consecutive Plant then hold shift when selecting the last consecutive Plant.
- Initiate Action: Select Actions > Destroy & Create Waste (this option is also used to create waste only)
- Input Details: Complete all required fields, confirming accuracy.. Destroy is Optional: to destroy the Plants, check the box to Destroy Plants, if unchecked this action will create Waste and not Destroy the Plants.

Verify Details & Submit: Verify the selected Plant(s) are correct, then click Submit
- Note: If destroying plants, when you select Submit a confirmation window will appear, "Confirm Plants Destruction: Are you sure you want to destroy these plants?" Select Submit.
Revert Plant Destruction Submissions (Non-Metrc Facilities)
If you need to restore plants to tracked in a Metrc Facility, please reach out to Metrc support.

- Navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Vegetative (Destroyed) and select the Plants you'd like Restored
- Initiate Action: Click "Restore Destroyed Plants"

Review & Submit: A confirmation screen will appear asking if you'd like to restore the Destroyed Plants. Click "Confirm", and the Plants will move back into the "Active" section
- Note: Metrc facilities will need to reach out to Metrc Support directly to request that plants be restored.
View Waste & Destroyed Plants:
- View Plant Batch Waste: Navigate to Business Intelligence > Inventory > Waste
- View Flowering or Vegetative Plant Waste: Navigate to Business Intelligence > Inventory > Waste
- View Destroyed Immature Plants: View the destroyed Immature Plant counts in the Destroyed column in Cultivation > Plant Batches
- View Destroyed Flowering or Vegetative Plants: Navigate to Cultivation > Plants > View: Flowering (Destroyed) or Vegetative (Destroyed)
Troubleshooting for Destroy Plants and Create Plant Waste
If you encounter an error, check these common scenarios before contacting support.
- Waste was created but the Plants weren't destroyed. You must check the box to Destroy Plants — not checking this will create Waste and not Destroy.
- Plants were destroyed when you only meant to log waste. Do not check the box to Destroy Plants unless you wish to Destroy them at the same time.
- The waste isn't showing in Metrc. For Metrc facilities creating Plant Waste without destroying them at the same time, Canix emails a .csv file to Upload Plant Waste to Metrc. You must complete this step in Metrc to upload the waste and remain compliant.
- The same waste log applied to every plant you selected. Creating Waste for multiple Plants or Plant Batches will associate the same Waste log with all of them. Log them separately if each needs its own entry.
- A Plant Batch disappeared from the Active view. Once all Plants in a Plant Batch have been destroyed, the Plant Batch will automatically become Inactive. Navigate to Plants > Plant Batches > View: Inactive.
- You destroyed Plants by mistake. For non-Metrc facilities, navigate to Plants: Vegetative (Destroyed), select the Plants, and click "Restore Destroyed Plants". Metrc facilities will need to reach out to Metrc Support directly to request that plants be restored.
- You see two submissions for one action. When creating Waste and Destroying one or more plants in Canix this will show as two separate submissions as these are two different actions.
- You need to log waste for a Harvest. Creating Plant Waste from a Harvest is done at a later time through the process Create Harvest Waste.
- You can't find the waste you submitted. Navigate to Reporting > Inventory > Waste.
- You can't find your destroyed plants. View individual destroyed plants in Plants > Plants > View: Flowering (Destroyed) or Vegetative (Destroyed), or view counts in the Destroyed column on the Plant Batches table.

Changing data in one area often triggers updates elsewhere. Understanding these relationships is critical for data integrity.
