Overview
Canix is where you create and manage Item Brands. When you create a brand in Canix and associate it with an item, Canix pushes both the brand and the item's brand association to Metrc automatically — you do not need to log into Metrc to manage brands.
A single brand in Canix maps to one Metrc brand per facility where it's used. If a brand is attached to items across 5 facilities, Canix creates 5 corresponding Metrc brand records — one per facility — all linked to the single Canix brand. Canix is the source of truth: updating a brand name in Canix updates all associated Metrc brands across all facilities automatically.
Permissions: Brand management is tied to Items permissions. Anyone with access to manage Items can create and edit brands in Canix.
Step 1: Create a Brand in Canix
Create your brand records in Canix first. Once created, they are available to associate with any item across your facilities.
- In Canix, navigate to the Brands section.
- Click Add Brand and enter the brand name.
- Save the brand. It will be pushed to Metrc automatically when it is associated with an item.
Step 2: Associate Brands with Items in Canix
Once your brands exist in Canix, associate them with your items. Canix will push the brand association to Metrc automatically.
If your items already have brands assigned in Canix, no action is needed — Canix will push those brands to Metrc on your behalf tonight.
If your items do not yet have a brand assigned, update them in Canix now:
- In Canix, navigate to Items.
- Select the item you want to update and click Edit.
- Select the appropriate brand from the Item Brand field.
- Save the item. The brand association will sync to Metrc automatically.
Step 3: Create New Items with Brands in Canix
When creating new items in Canix, include the Item Brand at the time of creation. The item and its brand will be pushed to Metrc together.
- In Canix, navigate to Items and click Add Item.
- Fill in the required fields, including Item Name, Item Category, Unit of Measure, and Item Brand.
- Save the item. Canix will create the item in Metrc with the brand already associated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to do anything in Metrc directly?
No. Create and manage your brands and items in Canix — Canix handles pushing everything to Metrc. You should not need to log into Metrc to manage brands.
My items already have brands in Canix. Do I need to do anything?
No. Canix will automatically push those brand associations to Metrc tonight on your behalf. If any items are still missing a brand in Metrc after tonight, you will be able to see that in Canix and add one manually.
My items don't have brands in Canix yet. What do I do?
Assign a brand to each item in Canix. Once saved, the association syncs to Metrc automatically. See Steps 1 and 2 above.
Which items require a brand?
All count-based (Each) finished good item types in NY require a brand as of May 15, 2026. This applies to all facility types except Testing Labs, and covers both existing items and any new items created going forward.
I manage brands across multiple facilities. Do I need to update each one separately?
Updating a brand name in Canix propagates to all linked Metrc brands across all facilities at once. However, submissions for each facility must be approved individually — there is no multi-facility batch approval.
What if the brand I'm creating already exists in Metrc?
Canix checks Metrc first. If a brand with the same name already exists, Canix will link to the existing record instead of creating a duplicate.
What happens if I delete a brand in Canix?
Deleting or archiving a brand in Canix will archive it in Metrc as well. Archived brands no longer appear in the Metrc API or UI, but historical data is preserved.
I edited a brand name directly in Metrc. Will it update in Canix?
No. Always manage brand names in Canix. Edits made in Metrc directly will only update the read-only "Metrc Brand Name" field in Canix and will not change your Canix brand name. Any discrepancy between the two will be surfaced in the brand modal in Canix.
