Types of Item Templates
There are two types of Item Templates that you can/will use in Canix:
- Default Item Template
- Item Type Template(s)
Default Item Template
When you first load Admin → Facility Data → Item Templates, you’ll be presented with an empty table of Item Templates
The first Item Template you must create will be the DEFAULT Item Template .
The Default Template is the first template you create, and is required to exist before you can create any Item Type specific Item Templates.
Any fields you set as Required on the Default Template, will be required to be set by ALL users on your account whom are creating or editing Items. The Default Item Template's required fields apply across all facilities, and all Item Types.
For example, the following Default Item Template will require all users of your account to provide sub-type and brand values when creating or editing any item
It is highly recommended that you keep the number of required fields on the Default Item Template to a bare minimum.
NOTE: We have no plans to modify how the Default Item Template operates now or in the future (unless customers surface issues with the Default Item Template via Canny or Customer Support Cases in Canix).
NOTE: You can create a Default Item Template that does not require any additional fields, if you so choose.
Creating the Default Item Template
NOTE: Your user must have the Edit permission for Item Templates set on the User Permission Group assigned to their user to create, edit, activate, deactivate, or delete any Item Templates (even the Default Item Template).
Default Item Template configurations will apply for every user creating/editing ALL Items across ALL Item Types, and across ALL Facilities within your Canix account (it is recommended you keep this to bare minimum for the DEFAULT template).

Item Type Template(s)
NOTE: Your user must have the Edit permission for Item Templates set on the User Permission Group assigned to their user to create, edit, activate, deactivate, or delete any Item Templates (even the Default Item Template).
Item Type Templates are those Item Templates which apply to any Item created or edited on your Canix account by any user, which must honor the required fields be set on the Item, where marked as “Required” on the Item Template.
Item Type Template’s required fields apply to only the respective Item Type, across ALL Facilities on your Canix account.
At this time, we have it on our radar to implement Facility-Aware Item Templates, but will decide to move forward with this feature development based on customer requests/feedback.

Activating/Deactivating Item Templates
Canix supports the ability for you to have activated and deactivated Item Templates on your account.
When an Item Template (default or item type) is ACTIVATED on your account, it means it is LIVE and requires all users creating/editing Items on your account to honor its configuration for required fields, respectively. Conversely, when an Item Template is DEACTIVATED on your account, it means that template will not affect the fields required to be set by users while creating/editing Items on your Canix account.
You may only DEACTIVATE Item Templates which are currently ACTIVE on your Canix account.

Troubleshooting Item Creation/Edit issues reported by your team while using Item Templates
Without any Item Templates defined, or if all Item Templates are DEACTIVATED, Canix will operate as if you never started using the Item Templates feature.
This is important, because as you work with Item Templates, if you or a member of your team complains they cannot create/edit Items on your account, and you have any Item Templates activated, deactivating all Item Templates is a wonderful first step to troubleshoot the problem.
